Here are some great Google Play Music Alternatives.

Things To Consider Before Buying Earphones

A few years ago, earphones were just a cheap accessory that came with your phone or mp3 player.

But nowadays, theyโ€™re not only used for listening to music; they provide a solution to people wanting to watch movies on the go and stay connected through calls and conference calls at work.

So what should you keep in mind when choosing your next pair of earphones?

The first step is to know your needs, not only the type of earphones you want to buy but also the type of sound signature.

This will help you determine which type of earphones are right for you. Secondly, try out different types of earphones in-store to see which one fits your ear best and also test the sound signature before buying it.

You can also read reviews online or on YouTube to get an idea about the type of sound quality they provide.

Before starting with the technical specs of the earphones you buy, firstly, understand the type of earphones you want for your daily use. There are mainly two types of earphones- earbuds and in-canal earphones.

Type

There are two varieties of in-ear earphones which are also known as earbuds.

One type sits in your ear cavity, and the other sits in your ear canal.

Most people prefer the second option as the earphones cancel out most of the outside noise and help you get the best music experience possible.

Types of Cables

Earphone cables are an often overlooked but essential part of the whole experience. It can affect sound quality, depending on what kind of technology is being implemented in the earphone.

The most common type of cable is a straight, single-conductor wire that is formable with bends and kinks. These cables typically offer less noise interference than an average round cable.

Earphone cables can often be the undoing of a good pair of headphones. If the cord is too long and heavy, it can tug and strain on the speakers in your ears and cause them to bleed at high volumes. For some people who like to blast their tunes, this might not seem like an issue, but for others who listen regularly without cranking up the volume, there is a real risk for hearing loss.

Accoustic System

In terms of earphone specs, the term โ€˜acousticsโ€™ means the design of the earphone. The earphone with a closed acoustic system stops sound leakage as much as possible. Other people will not be able to hear your music at its best volume. But if you are listening to music at a high level, the sound from your earphones will leak anyhow. On the contrary, with the open acoustic system, anyone nearby can hear what you’re listening to.

However, it’s worth noting that acoustic doesn’t mean that earphones are noise-canceling earphones. But a good fit closed acoustic earphones will reduce noise efficiently.

Frequency Range

As we have studied in our high school Science syllabus that a human ear is capable to hear the frequency from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz.

So, all the earphones come around with the same range of frequency. In other words, the frequency range determines the bass or treble of your earphones.

If we look at the lower frequency range limit then it typically comes from 12-22 Hz.

If we check the higher limit frequency range limit then it comes from 18,000 – 22,000 Hz (18-22 kHz).

Driver

Drivers are an important feature of earphones, as they convert electric signals into sound.

Drivers are the reason that you get to hear your favorite music through earphones. Drivers are usually made of three components- magnet, voice coils, and diaphragm.

There are three things you should look for in the earphone drivers for better sound. First, the enclosure of the driver unit, then the tuning, and finally the ear padding.

Generally speaking, earphone driver size does not matter. Many companies manufacture earphones with multiple drivers to amplify the range of frequencies by filtering them and concentrating each driver on a particular frequency range.

Frequency Response

In frequency response, we mean the range of frequencies of the earphone.

The wider the range is, the better the sound quality is.

So when you check the specifications of earphones, and you notice that the range of frequency is 4-24000 Hz or 15-24000 Hz, the former will be a better choice.

The larger the difference between the minimum and maximum, the wider the range coverage.

Impedance

Earphone impedance is the resistance between an electrical current and the earphones. The greater the return is, the weaker the electrical signal and the lower the sound level.

An earphone with a low impedance, ideally below 25 Ohms, is generally preferable. A low impedance is acceptable if you’re using portable earphones with a small device, such as a phone that doesn’t have a significant built-in amplifier.

However, if you use your earphones with devices that have amplifiers built-in, such as a sound system or DJing equipment, use earphones with an impedance of over 35 Ohms, high impedance earphones act as best as possible with devices carrying hefty amplifiers built-in.

Sensitivity and Sound Pressure Level (SPL)

Depending on the power level, the sensitivity of an earphone determines how loud it will be. In general, earphone A will produce louder audio at a volume of one milliwatt if its sensitivity rating is higher than earphone B’s at the same power level. Therefore, you will need to crank the volume knob less to get more volume from something.

As an example, a sensitivity rating of 86dB (decibels) is considered low, while anything above 110dB is considered high. Sensitivity is also known as Efficiency or Sound Pressure Level (SPL). The sound makes waves in the air, which is why you can hear it, and the higher the volume, the greater the pressure.

Total harmonic distortion

Total harmonic distortion indicates the internal noise that comes due to electronic parts and circuits of the earphones. This distortion can be mostly seen in those cheap Chinese earphones.

I don’t think you might be having any doubt when it comes to distortion.

Normally budget earphones have less than 1% of total harmonic distortion. However, it can be less than 0.5% or 0.1% in some premium and expensive earphones.

Noise Cancellation

Noise cancellation is a feature that comes with most earphones with a microphone. It cancels all the noise around you.

The noise that is captured by the microphone of an earphone is electronically detected and canceled using the internal circuit.

However, only the low-frequency noise that is constant in nature can be canceled by this technology. For instance, the sound of the ceiling fan or a cooler can be canceled because it is constant and much lower in frequency.

But the high frequency which is random in nature cannot be canceled. For example, if someone nearby talks to you then it cannot be canceled in any way.

Wired or Wireless

These days most earphones are made with wireless technology for easy use and portability. You can connect your earphones to your devices using Bluetooth or NFC. Wireless earphones are mostly wanted by users when they want to use the earphones on the go. But if you are using it in your station or at work, a wired one is also good.
