How Do Air Purifiers Work? Air Purifiers Under 10000 Rs

Air Purifier

There will be a time when you will need to buy an Air Purifier. That day is not too far when every house will have an Air Purifier just like AC is a norm these days. But how do Air Purifiers work?

We will be discussing the working of Air Purifiers but before that, let’s find out the intensity of Air pollution.

Chuck the colors and numbers here.

As per the Indian Government portal, 1-51 AQI is good. That’s it.

Anything above that is potentially harming you.

It is unbelievable that the Air which was freely available once, we need to pay for that now. If not today, then someday in the future.

Before buying an Air Purifier, I am sure most people don’t even know what to check. Also, the majority of people don’t know how air purifiers work!

How Do Air Purifiers Work?

The basic working is the same for all the Air Purifiers that it will suck all the air in the room and filter it to throw the same air outside.

However, the concepts are different for multiple Air Purifiers.

I want you to know that there are 5 types of Air Purifiers based on the filters. Not all of them work in a similar manner.

For instance, we clean and purify drinking water using various techniques, right? Similarly, there are various ways to clean the air as well.

1] HEPA Filter

HEPA stands for High-Efficiency Particulate Air.

It satisfies the standards because it filters out all the particles greater than 0.3 mm in size. That means it cleans 99% of the air particles.

Various layers of materials like cotton or foam are used to purify the air here. There is a particular life of every purifier. After that, you need to either clean it or simply replace it depending on the type of filter.

HEPA Filters are mostly used in homes, offices, and hospitals to remove impurities present in the air.

Pros of HEPA Filter

  • Best cheap air filter
  • Removes 99% of PM 2.5
  • Produces fresh and clean air indoors
  • It can be used as high-efficiency furnace filters

Cons of HEPA Filter

  • It cannot handle smoke and odors
  • Incapable of trapping small particles
  • Microbes stick to HEPA filter can reproduce, resulting in more numbers

2] Activated carbon filter

The properties of activated carbon like high chemical bonding and absorbent ability will make the device more efficient for capturing harmful pollutants like gases, smoke, and odors. Once the carbon filter traps all the particles, they cannot release back into the air thereby eliminating particles completely.

For those, who are willing to have high-end air purifiers that completely deter the odor, smoke, and VOC (volatile organic compounds) then it’s preferred to use an Activated Carbon Filter.

Pros of Activated carbon filter

  • Most absorbent filter
  • Robust design
  • Easy to maintain
  • Best budget air filter
  • Filters fumes, smoke, gases, and odors
  • Will not release pollutants back into the atmosphere

Cons of Activated carbon filter

  • Shorter lifespan
  • Not effective against bacteria and viruses

3] UV Technology

Implementing UV technology in air purifiers is an excellent method to kill harmful bacteria and viruses.

If you install it in purifiers then the microorganisms passed through the UV rays no longer exist. Its primary function is to kill only bacteria, viruses, yeasts, and molds. However, it cannot handle the dust, and smoke in the air. As a result, it is associated with other filters where it cannot do particular operations.

When you purchase the UV air purifier, make sure the system does not produce ozone (high-concentration).

Pros of UV Technology

  • Easy to clean and install
  • Reduces unpleasant odors in a kitchen
  • It focuses on eliminating microscopic elements

Cons of UV Technology

  • Expensive filter
  • Cannot filter smoke or dust particles effectively

4] Negative Ion

A negative ion is a system that uses high voltage to ionize (charge) the air molecules. It is a high-end air purification process that is fabricated around ion generators.

So, it drives the stream of negative ions that attract dust particles and allergens in the air. Since the majority of atoms are positive, surfaces attract them.

Some of the particles are being trapped by ionizers containing a metal plate and they need to be washed very frequently to perform the tasks effectively.

Moreover, the major advantage of using the ionizer filter is that it removes ultra-fine particles up to 1 micron without using fans or motors.

Pros of Negative Ion

  • Very inexpensive filter
  • No use of fans or motors
  • Removes the elements up to 0.01 microns

Cons of Negative Ion

  • It doesn’t remove odors
  • Harmful to asthma patients
  • Releases ozone into the air

5] Ozone

Ozone filters are designed to protect from all kinds of toxins in the air unless the concentrations are higher than the people’s health standards. Its functionality is similar to the ionizer, but it alters the oxygen molecules and turns to ozone. It is very good at deodorizing and disinfecting the air.

Ozone cannot purify the air and is considered as the toxic gas due to the unstable molecules which are responsible for causing breath-related problems.

If you are an asthma patient or prone to breathing issues, then strictly avoid using ozone purifiers at home. For such people, I would recommend using HEPA filters or Ozone-free air purifiers in India.

Pros of Ozone

  • Eliminates toxins at high concentration levels

Cons of Ozone

  • Do not remove particulates
  • Ozone is an unstable and potentially toxic gas
